University of Michigan researchers have developed a new technology that can print pure, ultra-precise doses of drugs onto a wide variety of surfaces could one day enable on-site printing of custom-dosed medications at pharmacies, hospitals and other locations. The technique can print multiple medications into a single dose on a dissolvable strip, microneedle patch or other dosing devices. The researchers say it could make life easier for patients who must now take multiple medications every day. The hardest thing about concrete just might be the problem of how to make the ubiquitous building material in an environmentally friendly manner. Recent laboratory results at Princeton University indicate that the challenge of making greener concrete may eventually be cracked. Concrete raises climate-change concerns because manufacturing its primary component, Portland cement, is responsible for as much as 8 percent of human carbon dioxide emissions. Biomedical engineers from the University of Sydney and the US collaborated on the development of the potentially life-saving surgical glue, called MeTro. MeTro’s high elasticity makes it ideal for sealing wounds in body tissues that continually expand and relax – such as lungs, hearts and arteries – that are otherwise at risk of re-opening.
