Common ‘oxygen sponge’ catalyst soaks up hydrogen too

Having the right tool for the job enabled scientists at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and their collaborators to discover that a workhorse catalyst of vehicle exhaust systems—an “oxygen sponge” that can soak up oxygen from air and store it for later use in oxidation reactions—may also be a “hydrogen sponge.” The finding, published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, may pave the way for the design of more effective catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions. The US Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory has developed a 3D printing process that creates a chemically active catalytic object in a single step, opening the door to more efficient ways to produce catalysts for complex chemical reactions in a wide scope of industries.While 3D printing has found applications in many areas, its use as a way to control chemical reactions or catalysis is relatively new. Power plants draw more freshwater than any other consumer in the US, accounting for more than 50 percent of the nation’s freshwater use at about 500 billion gallons daily.To help save this water, researchers at Sandia National Laboratories have developed a new silica filter for power plant cooling waters that decreases the number of freshwater power plants consume by increasing the number of times cooling tower water can be reused and recycled.“If you can recycle the water being used at power plants, it frees up a lot more water for domestic and personal use,” said Sandia geochemist Pat Brady.
