UN proclaims 2019 the international year of periodic table


The United Nations (UN) general assembly has proclaimed 2019 as the International Year of the periodic table of chemical elements (IYPT 2019). Among the different size categories of LPG ships, the small vessel segment is expected to be the best performer in 2018 while Handysize vessels will be the worst, according to the latest edition of the LPG Forecaster, published by global shipping consultancy Drewry. The LPG shipping market is currently oversupplied with vessels (with the exception of the small segment 1,000-5,000 cbm), as a result of strong fleet growth during the last three years. BASF’s Ultrasim simulation tool has long been able to deliver precise calculations of the anisotropic mechanical behaviour of fibre-filled plastics after manufacturing in the injection-moulding process. Lanxess AG said that it has made changes to the supervisory board. The board’s current chairman, Dr Rolf Stomberg (77) will resign from his office as a member and chairman of the supervisory board after the end of the annual stockholders’ meeting on 15 May 2018. Stomberg has recommended Dr Matthias Wolfgruber (64) to succeed him for the position of chairman of the supervisory board. Wolfgruber has a doctorate in chemistry, served as chairman of the board of management of Altana AG, and has belonged to the supervisory body as a representative for stockholders since 2015. Developing new way to create nanoscale emulsions


Emulsions, or oil-water mixtures, are of common occurrence in our daily lives. “In fact, our life begins with emulsions. When a baby is born the very first thing it drinks is milk, which is an emulsion,” said Sushant Anand, assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering. “So, we have long relationships with emulsions.” Emulsions are used in more items than we may realize. A wearable device that tracks the heart rate and breathing of babies has been developed by University of Sussex scientists for parents concerned about the possibility of cot death. The technology uses liquid-based sensors which contain an emulsion made from graphene, water and oil, which conducts electricity. Comprised of carbon atoms, as a material graphene is strong, flexible and conductive, when a channel or tube holding the liquid is stretched, even by a small amount, the conductivity of the liquid changes. BASF SE and Toda Kogyo Corp (TODA) has closed their agreement to form BASF Toda America LLC (BTA). SNC-Lavalin (SNC) in consortium with TechnipFMC, has been awarded a lump sum EPC contract to supply Nova Chemicals with two gas cracking furnaces. This award supports the recently announced third phase of the conversion and expansion of Nova Chemicals’ Corunna cracker. The cracker which is expected to increase the unit’s current ethylene capacity by more than 50 percent and is linked to the construction of a new polyethylene facility being developed by Nova Chemicals. Ingevity Corporation has completed the acquisition of Georgia-Pacific’s pine chemicals business for $310 million in cash. Ingevity expects to derive approximately $11 million in net synergies as a result of the acquisition, which are expected to be attained through lower logistics costs, manufacturing optimization among the combined three chemicals plants and leveraged procurement costs. In purchasing the pine chemicals business, Ingevity has acquired the pine chemicals-related assets at Georgia-Pacific’s Crossett plant. Read more
