BASF’s light stabilizer Chimassorb 2020 has been adopted by Ray Colors, a leading agricultural plastics masterbatch manufacturer in India, to make polypropylene (PP) non-woven fabric. This is used to cover crops, plants and vegetables to protect them from adverse weather conditions and pests. Exposure to sunlight can have adverse effects on the life of plastic products. German Agriculture Minister Julia Kloeckner said she was finalizing a draft regulation to end use of the weed-killer glyphosate in household gardens, parks and sports facilities, and to set “massive” limits for its use in agriculture. The chemical, made by Monsanto Company, is at the centre of a heated debate in Europe over whether it causes cancer. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) agreed in February to systematically and significantly limit its use, with the goal of entirely ending use of products that contain it but set no timeframe. Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is planning to create four new units for its various businesses, two people in the know said. The subsidiaries could be in refining and marketing; exploration and production (E&P); petrochemicals; textiles; hydrocarbons and real estate. “The new subsidiaries would have an authorized share capital of Rs 1,000 crore each,” one of the two people said, requesting anonymity. The company plans to apply to the corporate affairs ministry shortly to obtain requisite approvals required for incorporating the companies. Read more
Wacker Polymers said that it will raise its prices for vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer dispersions and dispersible powders of the Vinnapas brand in the Americas region. Effective 30 May 2018, prices will be raised by up to five percent in the Americas. Ongoing high raw material costs, especially for vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) which is a primary raw material for the manufacturing of Wacker’s vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer dispersions and dispersible powders, necessitate this step. Additionally, a logistics surcharge of $0.03 per pound will be implemented for all shipments effective May 30, 2018. Read more
