Clariant announced the official opening of two new, fully-owned additives facilities at its site in Zhenjiang, China. Ineos Oxide said that it is progressing plans to expand dipropylene glycol (DPG) capacity at its site in Koln, Germany. The company confirmed that it has started the front-end engineering design (FEED) and expects to complete the engineering studies during the course of 2018. Currently, construction of the plant is expected to start in 2019 with start-up planned for early 2020. Dipropylene glycol is used as a solvent and scent carrier in the fragrance and laundry industries, as well as a component of speciality plasticisers and unsaturated polyester resins. BASF SE has received the first global registrations in Australia and India for the new active ingredient, Inscalis insecticide. AkzoNobel NV has entered into an agreement to acquire 100 percent shares of Fabryo Corporation SRL (Fabryo), becoming the leader in the Romanian decorative paints market. The transaction includes two production facilities and six distribution centres for decorative paints, adhesives and mortars, including one of the largest decorative paints factories in the region, with capacity for further expansion. The business generated revenue of around €45 million in 2017 and is the only player with both a leading product portfolio for consumers as well as professional segments in the Romanian market, including brands Savana, APLA and InnenWeiss. BASF increases Neopor capacity globally

BASF SE said that it is increasing its global production capacity for Neopor (expandable polystyrene containing graphite) by a total of 40,000 metric tons per year. Adjustments in the plants at the two production sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Ulsan, Korea, will take place through the fourth quarter of 2018. At the Ulsan site in Korea, BASF will switch the plant’s entire 85,000 metric tons capacity from the classic white EPS (expandable polystyrene) Styropor to the improved insulation raw material Neopor (grey EPS) until end of 2018. Reliance Industries Ltd is investing in setting up India’s first carbon fibre manufacturing unit to cater to aerospace and defence needs, the company said in its annual report. The owner of world’s largest oil refining complex will also make low-cost and high-volume composite products like modular toilets, homes and composites for windmill blades and rotor blades. Without giving investment details, Reliance in its latest annual report said it has developed capabilities for 3D printing of wide-range of plastic and metals products. Reliance is developing new business verticals in the petrochemicals business to capture Rs 30,000 crore composites market. Read more


A sample of additively manufactured silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) material is tested at Arnold Air Force Base. The testing was conducted as part of a Cooperative Research and Development – Material Transfer Agreement between the Air Force Research Laboratory Aerospace Systems Directorate and HRL Laboratories. The Air Force is testing materials produced through ceramic additive manufacturing to advance their potential future use in hypersonic flight vehicles. Air Products and Chemicals Inc (APD) announced it will install energy storage systems at its industrial gas sites in Gumi City, as well as Onsan and Yongyeon of Ulsan City, South Korea. BASF Venture Capital GmbH said that it is to invest in LanzaTech, a biotech company headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, US. Using special microbes, LanzaTech has developed a technology for gas fermentation that first enables ethanol to be produced from residual gases containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen. By re-using waste streams instead of incinerating them, industrial companies can reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Phillips 66 (PSX) said that it is proceeding with an expansion of the company’s Sweeny Hub. This project includes the construction of two 150,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) natural gas liquids (NGL) fractionators in Old Ocean, Texas. Additional NGL storage capacity, and associated pipeline infrastructure. The project is expected to cost up to $1.5 billion and begin commercial operations in late 2020. Supply agreements have been secured for Y-grade NGL feedstock, including an agreement with DCP Midstream LP (DCP) which has an option to acquire up to a 30 percent ownership interest in the new fractionators. PPG Industries Inc (PPG) announced the appointment of Rebecca Liebert as senior vice president, automotive coatings, effective June 25. Liebert joins PPG from Honeywell UOP, where she served as president and chief executive officer. In a major milestone for domestic company Biocon Limited, the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has approved its biosimilar Pegfilgrastim for cancer, co-developed with Mylan NV. Pegfilgrastim (Fulphila) will represent a more affordable treatment for oncology patients, says Biocon CMD Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in an interview with TOI.
