Google Doodle honours scientist who made alcohol from potatoes


COLOGNE, GERMANY: Lanxess AG said that its material protection products (MPP) business unit will showcase its effective cold sterilisation technology for soft drinks and to present its Velcorin technology as an oenological method for stabilising wine. “Velcorin can be used in many beverage categories, from carbonated soft drinks, iced tea and juice-based drinks, to sport and energy drinks, mixed beer drinks, cider and wine,” said Ingo Broda, head of the beverage technology business line in MPP. JERSEY, UK: Swedish scientist Eva Ekeblad would be celebrating her 293rd birthday today and Google has created a Doodle in her honour.  Ekeblad who was born in Sweden on 10 July 1724, was a noble and agronomist who discovered how to extract starch from potatoes, paving the way for gluten-free baking and alcohols such as vodka, moonshine and potato wine. SAO PAULO, BRAZIL: AkzoNobel NV said that it has planted around 12,000 seedlings at of its sites in Brazil, a large area in the Brazilian rainforest. The species are native to this region and are part of the company’s ongoing project to safeguard the fragile ecosystem. The seedlings will replace part of the existing non-native eucalyptus woodland within a six-hectare plot at the Tangara Reserve, which sits inside the company’s Maua facility in Sao Paulo.
